International E-waste Day 2025

Launching the 1000th Collection Point and the revamped STEP UP app

International E-Waste Day (IEWD) 2025 was commemorated 12 October 2025 at Bedok Town Square, with a focus on Accessibility – STEP UP E-waste Recycling: Bringing Collection Points Closer to You.

The annual event, co-organised by ALBA E-Waste Smart Recycling Pte Ltd (ALBA E-Waste) and the National Environment Agency (NEA), seeks to raise awareness on the importance of proper e-waste recycling and highlight new initiatives that make recycling easier for all Singapore residents. The event was graced by Guest-of-Honour Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment and Ministry of Education.

Key Announcements at IEWD 2025

      1. Achieving a Milestone: The 1000th E-waste Collection Point

The theme of “Accessibility” underscores Singapore’s commitment to make e-waste recycling more convenient and inclusive. ALBA E-Waste has an expansive network of e-waste collection avenues – from e-waste recycling bins in retailers, malls, schools, and supermarkets, to free doorstep collection services for large household appliances – ensuring that recycling is within reach for everyone. 12 October 2025 marked the unveiling of Singapore’s 1000th e-waste collection point, a major milestone in the Producer Responsibility Scheme (PRS) since ALBA E-Waste was appointed as the Operator in 2021.

This special e-waste recycling bin features a unique artwork designed by a student who took part in an E-waste Recycling Bin Design Competition organised by ALBA E-Waste and the Waste Management and Recycling Association of Singapore (WMRAS). The winning design, submitted by Lee Yi Xuan, features a vibrant, comic-style artwork with illustrated electronic devices in a mix. This specially-designed e-bin will be placed at Heartbeat@Bedok until February 2026, and subsequently placed at different locations every quarter.

      2. All Community Centres / Community Clubs to Have an E-waste Recycling Bin by 30 June 2026

To further improve accessibility, it was announced that every Community Centre / Community Club (CC) across Singapore will be equipped with an e-waste recycling bin by 30 June 2026. This collaboration with the People’s Association ensures that residents in all neighbourhoods will have convenient access to e-waste recycling points.

      3. Launch of the Revamped ALBA STEP UP App

A major highlight of IEWD 2025 was the launch of the newly revamped ALBA STEP UP app, designed to encourage the public to recycle their e-waste. Responding to user feedback, the app now includes:

  • A bin-locator feature to help users easily find the nearest e-waste collection point that accepts the type of e-waste the user wishes to recycle.
  • Event updates, enabling the public to participate in recycling drives and community activities.
  • A more intuitive and user-friendly interface, designed from the user’s perspective.
  • New range of rewards to motivate individuals and organisations to recycle responsibly.

The app’s new mascot, Patch, was also unveiled. Inspired by ALBA’s logo and brand color palette, Patch incorporates elements of everyday e-waste such as washing machine dials, tangled cables and discarded electronic components where they are then reassembled into a cheerful, patchwork character. The name “Patch” reflects both the robot’s up-cycled nature, as well as its mission: to patch the gap between throwing away and recycling.
